Upgrading wheels from stock to custom: Would they fit and what should you know?

Stock wheels are engineered to balance ride quality, fuel efficiency, tyre longevity, and purchase cost. Switching to custom wheels shifts that balance deliberately. Whether the trade-off works depends on understanding five fitment variables before you spend anything.


The Five Fitment Variables

Bolt Pattern (PCD)

The bolt pattern is written as the number of lug nuts multiplied by the bolt circle diameter in millimetres. Some common patterns:

This must match exactly. Wheel adapters reduce effective thread engagement on the studs and add a secondary failure point at road speed. Avoid them entirely.


Centre Bore

OEM wheels are hub-centric. The centre hole matches your hub’s outer diameter so the wheel self-centres on the hub, not on the lug nuts.

Most aftermarket wheels are lug-centric, with a larger bore than your hub. This causes harmonic vibration between 80 and 110 km/h that wheel balancing will not fix, because the vibration comes from the wheel being slightly off-centre, not from weight imbalance.

The fix is hub-centric rings, which fill the gap between the wheel bore and your hub. They cost $15 to $40 for a set of four. Common hub diameters include:

  • Honda Civic FK/FL: 64.1mm
  • Toyota RAV4 AXAH54: 60.1mm
  • Mazda CX-5 KF: 67.1mm
  • Subaru Forester SK: 56.1mm
  • Ford Mustang S550: 70.5mm

If your chosen wheel has a 73.1mm bore and your hub is 67.1mm, order 73.1 to 67.1 hub-centric rings. Always confirm the ring fitment when ordering, because the wheel supplier will know the wheel’s bore but you need to supply your hub diameter.


Offset (ET)

Offset is the distance in millimetres from the wheel’s mounting face to its centreline.

Positive offset: mounting face sits outboard of centre. The wheel tucks deeper into the arch. Standard on front-wheel-drive vehicles.

Zero offset: mounting face is at exact centre.

Negative offset: mounting face sits inboard of centre. The wheel sits proud of the arch. Common on trucks and on vehicles with a wide, aggressive fitment.

Deviating from OEM offset changes your scrub radius, which affects steering feedback and tyre wear. Staying within 10mm of your stock ET in either direction is safe without additional checks. Beyond that, physically verify inner barrel clearance against coilovers and control arms at full lock, and check outer tyre clearance against the guard liner under suspension compression.

A practical example: the Mazda CX-5 KF runs ET45 on factory 17-inch and 19-inch wheels. A wheel at ET35 moves the tyre face 10mm outward, which is manageable. At ET25, the front tyre contacts the guard liner at full steering lock because the KF has tight arch geometry.


Width and Tyre Compatibility

Every tyre size has a recommended and maximum wheel width range. Mounting a 245/45R18 on a 7-inch wheel stretches the tyre past its intended profile. The sidewall bulges outward, the contact patch narrows, and the tyre runs hotter under load. The same tyre on an 8.5-inch wheel sits correctly.

Width compounds offset. A 9-inch wide wheel at ET40 positions the outer tyre face identically to an 8-inch wheel at ET35. Calculate both together when specifying a fitment, not separately.


Diameter and Overall Tyre Diameter

Increasing wheel diameter requires reducing tyre aspect ratio to maintain the same overall tyre diameter. ABS, traction control, the speedometer, and the odometer all calibrate to wheel rotation frequency. Changing overall diameter by more than 2.5% produces measurable speedometer error and can affect ABS threshold calculations.

Plus-sizing example using the Toyota Camry XV70, which runs 215/55R17 stock at 683mm overall diameter:

Use a tyre diameter calculator to check any combination before purchasing. Do not assume the wheel retailer has done this check for you.


Wheel Construction

Cast aluminium is the standard for OEM and most budget aftermarket wheels. It is heavier than the alternatives and adequate for daily driving.

Flow-formed (rotary forged): The centre is cast, then the barrel is formed under rotational pressure while the aluminium is hot. This densifies and thins the barrel walls, producing 15 to 20 percent less weight than an equivalent cast wheel with better impact resistance. This is the best value construction for performance-oriented daily driving. Examples include the Enkei RPF1, Konig Hypergram, and Advanti Storm S1.

Forged monoblock: Billet aluminium is pressed under high tonnage then CNC-machined from a single piece. A forged 18×8 wheel typically weighs around 7.5kg versus 10kg or more for cast. Each kilogram of unsprung weight removed measurably improves suspension response, braking distance, and fuel efficiency. Cost is $400 to $900 per wheel. Examples include the Volk TE37, BBS FI-R, and Enkei NT03.

Multi-piece forged: Centre and barrel sections are machined separately and bolted together. This allows fully custom width and offset per corner, which is necessary for aggressive fitment builds or vehicles with different front and rear specifications. Cost is $600 to $1,500 or more per wheel. Examples include Work Wheels Emotion T7R and ADV1.

For a daily driver covering 15,000km per year, flow-formed construction gives the best performance-to-cost ratio. Forged monoblock is justified on track-prepped vehicles where the unsprung weight reduction has a direct impact on lap times.


Brake Calliper Clearance

A wheel that clears a standard single-piston calliper may foul a 4-pot Brembo by 5 to 8mm on the same vehicle. This must be checked before purchasing.

Steps to verify:

  1. Find your calliper’s height and radial position relative to the hub, either from the manufacturer or workshop data
  2. Ask the wheel manufacturer for their stated minimum calliper clearance
  3. Cross-reference with owner forums for your specific vehicle and calliper combination, because real-world reports are more reliable than spec sheets alone

For vehicles with standard OEM brakes, moving from 17-inch to 18-inch or 19-inch wheels generally increases clearance. The problem appears when fitting aftermarket callipers on OEM-sized wheels, or when downsizing below stock diameter.


TPMS

Vehicles manufactured in Australia after November 2014 are required to have tyre pressure monitoring systems under ADR 42/05. When fitting aftermarket wheels, OEM TPMS sensors need to be handled in one of two ways:

Transfer to new wheels: A tyre shop can remove and reinstall the existing sensors during fitting. This costs $20 to $50 per sensor in labour and works well when the sensor’s valve stem is compatible with the new wheel’s valve hole.

Replace with programmable universal sensors: Options such as the Schrader EZ-sensor or Continental VDO sensor cost $40 to $80 each and need to be programmed to your vehicle’s ECU during fitting.

Snap-in rubber valve stem sensors transfer easily. Metal clamp-in sensors are wheel-specific and usually require replacement. Confirm which type your vehicle uses before ordering wheels, because the valve hole size and shape in the wheel must match the sensor.


Ride Quality

A larger diameter wheel requires a lower profile tyre. The shorter sidewall means less air volume between the road surface and the rim. The sidewall absorbs small to medium road imperfections. When you reduce it, those impacts transfer more directly to the cabin.

On smooth roads, a 40-series sidewall improves cornering response. Less lateral flex produces more direct steering feedback and a more planted feel at speed.

On rough urban roads, the same low-profile tyre transmits impacts harshly into the cabin, increases the risk of rim damage from potholes, and makes the tyre more vulnerable to sidewall damage from kerb strikes.

Melbourne CBD streets, most suburban arterials, and unsealed rural roads are punishing conditions for sub-45-series tyres on a daily driver. A 55-series sidewall on 17-inch wheels will outlast a 40-series on 19-inch wheels by a meaningful margin under those conditions.

If the upgrade is primarily for aesthetics while keeping the vehicle comfortable to drive daily, a fitment of 18-inch with a 45-series tyre gives a clear visual improvement over stock 17-inch wheels without the harshness that comes with 19-inch and 35 or 40-series combinations.


Weight and Fuel Efficiency

Unsprung weight is the mass not supported by the suspension: wheels, tyres, brake rotors, and hubs. Increasing it worsens suspension compliance and ride quality.

A typical OEM 17-inch cast wheel weighs 9 to 10kg. A quality aftermarket 19-inch cast wheel weighs 11 to 13kg. That is 8 to 12kg of additional unsprung weight across all four corners, before accounting for wider and heavier tyres.

On a 1,600kg vehicle in mixed city and highway driving, the fuel impact is approximately 0.3 to 0.8 litres per 100km depending on tyre width and the total weight increase. Over 15,000km per year, that is 45 to 120 extra litres annually. Forged or flow-formed wheels at 7 to 8kg per corner recover most of this penalty.

The ongoing tyre replacement cost is what most buyers underestimate. A 245/40R18 premium tyre costs $180 to $280 each. The equivalent 215/55R17 costs $120 to $180 each. Over three replacement cycles on a daily driver, the size difference adds $700 to $1,200 in tyre costs alone.


Pre-Purchase Checklist

  • Confirm bolt pattern is an exact match
  • Identify your hub centre bore diameter and specify the correct hub-centric rings when ordering
  • Calculate offset delta from OEM and stay within 10mm, or perform physical clearance checks if exceeding that
  • Verify your chosen tyre size keeps overall diameter within 2.5% of OEM
  • Cross-check tyre width against the wheel width compatibility range
  • Confirm brake calliper clearance against the wheel’s stated minimum
  • Budget for TPMS sensor transfer or replacement
  • Check state regulations on tyre protrusion past the guard and allowable speedometer deviation
